It’s Sunday, July 21 and we’re at the end of WEEK 3!!! Wow, was it a hot week!!!! It’s a good thing I’m measuring miles and not measuring sweat loss or gallons of liquids consumed!
This week instead of the 3 hour easy bike, I did the Tri Del Sol Olympic distance triathlon yesterday. It was still three hours (3:02:07 to be exact) but I pushed hard! I had a very fast swim, even with another girl right on me the whole time. It wasn’t an ironman and there weren’t 1,500 of us in the water. But for some reason, she was bumping into me for almost the whole second loop. Frustrating for a small race, but it made me work harder mentally. Part of the ironman swim challenge is the mental toughness required to fight for every stroke with so many people all around. Sometimes I wonder why I practice good swim form anyway….. So after a hard swim yesterday, I had a super hilly 24 mile bike. I pushed it hard- thanks to my friend/trainer Danni who encouraged me to keep it in the big ring as much as possible. That worked for about 16 miles until I came to a big 1 mile climb where I had to gear down. But I had a good, hard bike ride with my fastest ever mph average (17.7) and my legs were still able to run. If you read my last post called “I Need Water”, I used the ice cube trick on the run and it worked well on a hot, sunny day! And for an added bonus, I found out today that I came in third in my age category. Too bad I didn’t stay for the awards ceremony.
I switched drinks this week from Gatorade Endurance to Powerbar Perform thanks to Chris Mabie’s suggestion. I like it better- it’s thinner and easier to drink. I’m considering switching from peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to protein cookies on the bike. I’m getting tired of PB & J already and they are messy. Any suggestions or ideas????
17 weeks until Ironman Arizona!
