What a blast! Have you ever run a race and found three tables full of cookies waiting for you at the finish? Thousands of them- literally- of all different kinds-chocolate chip, sugar cookies, peanut butter, oatmeal, cranberry almond, even dairy-free blueberry cookies. If this sounds fun to you, come join us next year at the Second Annual Team Orphans Cookie 5K. We had a great first race with over 350 runners and raised $9,264.00 for adoption grants! Thank you to everyone who ran, walked, volunteered, baked cookies, sponsored, set up, and cleaned up. Here are my highlights- and my lowlights- from my first time as a race director.
Highlight- Coming back from running the course (before the race to make sure all the signs and flags were up) and finding hundreds of people in the parking lot and seeing lots of yellow Cookie 5K shirts
Lowlight- Marking the course with Danni the night before in the pouring rain wondering if all race directors do this….
Highlight- Watching the kids finish the 5K with faces full of joy, intensity, and wonder I love to watch kids run. They make it look so easy. They’re not worried about correct form or whether or not they’ll wake up sore the next day. They just take huge strides and smile big.
Lowlight- Finding out the night before that the porta john company put them in the wrong place- where the cookie tables were supposed to be!! Those two smells can’t go together!!! So we had to redo the maps and move everything around. It worked.
Highlight- Finding Wood TV 8 at the race to do an interview!!!!!! We were on their program Eight West on Tuesday. Great PR!
Hightlight- Three of my former Calvin College roommates came- Kimberley Mulder (from Ohio), Ann Stoub (from Indiana), and Sarah Fasse. We sat in Robinette’s bakery after the race and spent about an hour catching up on old times! Thank you to everyone who cleaned up so I could enjoy my “mini-reunion”.
Lowlight- My living room is still a mess, scattered with “race stuff”. I hope to have it all packed away by this coming Saturday.
Last Highlight- Doing all this again next year!!! Our goal- 700 runners and $20,0000 raised
