Week 14- 174 miles this week. I finally made it to Arizona. Well, sort of…. If I had started here in Rockford, MI and taken major highways to swim, bike, and run these last 14 weeks, I’d be in Arizona now. It helps me to see how far I’ve actually gone. No matter how long my workout, I always end up back at home sweet home- which is exactly where I love to crawl in bed every night. : ) I think I’ll keep the maps going west past Tempe, Arizona, heading toward Kona, Hawaii where I hope to be racing one day soon. I’ll save that for another blog another day.
On Friday night, I thought back over all the miles of the week and couldn’t find anything very interesting. There were no cool animals this week, no close calls with danger, nothing I thought that I could write about. Then Tom and I headed north for our getaway weekend.
The fall colors were absolutely beautiful. Saturday morning, we walked around North Port and watched the salmon heading upstream. The stream was very shallow so they were very easy to see from the bridge above. Tom and I did a 6 mile trail run in the afternoon at Leelanau State Park. It was fabulous. We were in our first mile when we saw a big group of wild turkeys. There were two overlooks to Lake Michigan that were stunning. And then, on our way out of the park, we saw a huge porcupine!!! I’ve never seen a porcupine in the wild and I was excited! He was much larger than I thought- much bigger than a raccoon. And his quills weren’t black like I expected. They were black on the body side, but then turned a bright yellowish/white on the outside. So cute!!!! His head was little and he didn’t move very fast. But he was fast enough to disappear before Tom could take a picture. Bummer. It still delighted me and put a big smile on my face! I’m starting Week 15 tomorrow- another hard week but still with a smile on my face!
