There’s a wonderful cookie smell in the Team Orphans kitchen. In addition to Team Orphans athletes, races, 5K’s, and Ironmans, there’s a Cookie Business brewing. Yep, Team Orphans may be launching a new business venture soon and it will taste SO GOOD!
It all started this summer when Tom found a protein cookie recipe for me ( that also happened to be gluten free). After many batches and hours of recipe tweaking, I came up with the perfect substitution for peanut butter and jelly sandwiches during the Ironman bike- a peanut butter chocolate chip protein cookie. So for the past 5 months, I’ve been training with yummy cookies instead of soggy sandwiches. Since the cookies happen to be gluten free, I let several of my gluten free friends try them. The response was overwhelmingly positive. I’m not gluten free, but from what I hear, a lot of gluten free products don’t taste great. These cookies are the exception!
Tom came to me in July and said, “I have an idea for you!” My first response was, “Uh- oh! No, I’m not going to organize a Team Orphans triathlon!” (The Team Orphans 5K was all his idea.) Thankfully, his idea had nothing to do with triathlons. He said, “Your protein cookies are amazing and everybody loves them. Why don’t you start a cookie business and donate all of the profits to Team Orphans- like Newman’s Own Spagetti Sauce.”
So Tom, my idea person, put the idea on my plate (pun intended) and now I’m running with it (another pun intended)! I don’t have the time to launch full force into exploring the business portion of this until after my Ironman next week. But I have been experimenting with recipes and I have three flavors now- peanut butter/ chocolate chip, oatmeal raisin, and coconut/dark chocolate chip. All three are protein based and made with gluten free ingredients. My hope is that we can tap into two growing markets- the gluten free market and the athlete energy bar market.
I’d love to hear your ideas, suggestions, and opinions. You could be a cookie taster too! I’ll keep you updated on the business.
