I’d like to introduce to you one of my hero moms. Her name is Kristen Webster and she is the adopted mother of two beautiful girls, Rena (12 ) and Maryn (5). Kristen is a compassionate, caring, dedicated mom like many others I know. However, what makes her stand out in the crowd is that she is a full-time mom and business owner as a single woman!
I met Kristen about 8 years ago at a jewelry show. At that time, she had adopted Rena and was pursuing a second adoption. Now, years later, I know a little more of her story. Kristen has always loved children and always wanted to adopt, not surprising since her brother is adopted. Her mom tells her that when she was little, all her little dolls were adopted! In fact, one of them was named Rena, her grandmother’s name and now her oldest daughter’s name. Kristen was a nanny for children while she was in college studying child development. She bought her current house soon afterwards and in 1995, started a daycare business out of her home.
Her business has grown over the years and so has her family! She can care for up to 12 children in her home, and she has 2 employees. She adopted Rena from Guatemala in 2001 and Maryn from Ethiopia in 2008. But through it all, Kristen has always been able to take care of her girls! That’s the best part about her business. Kristen said that she has had offers to do other things over the years, but she can’t imagine doing anything else!
Her daughters have had significant health issues and many hospitalizations, but she has a very supportive network of family and friends to help her. Kristen knows that her being single mom and business owner would never work without all of this support.
Like many other adoptive moms, Kristen is an inspiration to the women around her. One of her daycare families is now in the adoption process! How fun it will be for Rena and Maryn to see another child adopted and be a part of their lives. Kristen also has encouraged other single women to adopt and start their own daycare business. She is proof that it can be done and done well!
