It’s January 1, but I’m not one for resolutions. Whatever I resolve to do, I usually do it with 200% gusto regardless of the time of year. (Those of you who know me well are laughing!) But I thought I would let you know what’s going on with Team Orphans in 2014.
My focus is still twofold- 1. spread the word about Team Orphans around the country so athletes will join us and raise money with one of their races 2. have successful Team Orphans events here in the Grand Rapids area with a growing number of business sponsors.
For the first focus area, I’m trying two new ways to spread the word around the country. I’m in the process of starting up a cookie business that donates all of it’s profits to Team Orphans. It’s still in the beginning stage so I don’t know if it’s a “go” yet. I have three flavors of gluten-free protein cookies and my tasters are excited and gobbling them up. But there are a lot of things that are uncertain in the business side of the equation. I’ll keep you posted. The second way I hope to spread the word about Team Orphans is through the Ironman Kona Inspired video competition. Athletes with a cause can submit a 90 second video to the Ironman Foundation. The top 40 videos will go online for world-wide voting. The top 8 athletes get a free entry to the Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii, and the Ironman Foundation will match what we raise up to $10,000. That’s an opportunity I can’t pass up. Even if I only make it the top 40, people all over the world will hear about Team Orphans and adoption.
For the second focus area- events in the Grand Rapids area- here’s what we have planned!
On Saturday, Feb. 1, we’re having our Crazy Cycling Day at the Belmont YMCA. Participants can sign up at www.teamorphans.com/cycle for a 1 hour spot. Some hours are run as classes for a hard work out. Other hours are just pedal, play games, win prizes, and have fun. For a one hour spot, participants can donate $25 to Team Orphans or ask someone to sponsor them. It’s a great event for the whole family. Kids big enough to reach the pedals can join us. The younger kids can enjoy the KidZone at no charge. The Y is allowing all of our participants to use the Y for the day at no charge- pool, gym, equipment, locker rooms, etc.
Friday, April 25 at 7:00 pm is our Team Orphans Jewelry Fashion Show at Trinity Baptist Church in Grand Rapids. Mothers and adopted daughters model beautiful jewelry for a ladies only event. It’s a great mother daughter night or girl’s night out. Emily Davis, our Premier Designs Jewelry business sponsor, donates all of the profits from jewelry sales to Team Orphans.
Saturday, July 26 at 8:00 am is our 2nd Annual Cookie 5K Run/1 Mile Walk at Robinette’s Apple House on 4 Mile. Run the 5K, walk the 5K, or walk just the first mile and end up by the cookie tables. Thousands of homemade cookies wait for hungry kids and grownups alike. The 5K takes you through the beautiful apple, cherry, and apricot orchards, around Kuyper College and on the trail through the woods. Registration is $20/person or $60/family and every dollar is donated to Team Orphans.
I hope you can join us in 2014 as we continue to help unite orphans around the world with their forever families!
