I love finding teenagers who are focused on helping others. It’s not as common as we would all hope. But I’ve had the privilege of blogging about a few outstanding teens who are making a difference in the lives of others. Let me introduce you to Ashley Snow.
Ashley is 14 years old and is a 9th grader at the Rockford Freshman Center. A few weeks ago, Ashley saw a video at church youth group from Urban Mountain Adventures in Lynchberg, Virginia. The video asked people to help them raise money for a much needed van to transport inner city kids to their ministry activities. Ashley heard the youth pastor mention that maybe they could do a bake sale as a possible idea. So Ashley took the initiative and started a bake sale of her own. “I’ve always enjoyed baking. It’s fun!” Ashley decided to send out some emails, offering some of her favorite baked goods for sale to raise money for the van. Her goal was to raise $200, but in just a few weeks, she’s already raised $315. And she can keep taking orders, baking, and supporting this ministry through July. Then she’ll be going with her youth group out to Virginia to deliver the money she’s raised as part of the STEP mission trip.
Urban Mountain Adventures urbanmountainadventures.org works with at-risk youth and introduces them to adventures- whitewater rafting, hiking, backpacking- but also to the love of Jesus. Most of these kids have never experienced either of these! Another young lady from Ashley’s church, Marissa Wilterink, is on staff with Urban Mountain Adventures. She moved out to Virginia for a job in broadcasting, but found out about this great organization and joined them.
Ashley’s tasty treats are still for sale! I personally loved the peanut butter balls (the overall most popular) and the Oreo cheesecake minis.

Thank you Ashley for using your gifts and talents to help others. When I hear the words to this new Matthew West song, I’ll think of you.
“I woke up this morning
Saw a world full of trouble now
Thought, how’d we ever get so far down
How’s it ever gonna turn around
So I turned my eyes to Heaven
I thought, “God, why don’t You do something?”
Well, I just couldn’t bear the thought of
People living in poverty
Children sold into slavery
The thought disgusted me
So, I shook my fist at Heaven
Said, “God, why don’t You do something?”
He said, “I did, I created YOU”
