How far is it from Ethiopia to the US? How long would it take you to travel it by plane? Here’s a crazy question- How long would it take you to run, walk, swim, or bike the same distance? With my Virtual Ironman team, we are going to travel the course of an Ethiopian adoption from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to New York City- 6,956 miles. Every mile we travel will be a mile of exercise- walking, running, swimming, biking, walking the dog, roller blading-any exercise measurable by distance..Do you care about the global orphan crisis? Can you exercise 6 miles/ week? Would you help a family who is adopting a special needs orphan or sibling group and needs financial help? I’m looking for 50 people who are up for a FUN challenge for a GREAT cause. Join my Virtual Ironman Team and start logging your miles for our journey.
Here’s how it works: You have from June 1 to Nov. 1 to complete 140.6 miles of any exercise of your choice- that’s about 6 miles each week. I have from now until Nov. 1 to raise $15,000 for Team Orphans adoption grants. This will be my fourth Ironman that I’m racing for adoption, but this time you get to join me in the exercise. I’ll start my Ironman training on June 1 and I’ll cross the finish line at Ironman Florida on November 1. When I finish 140.6 miles, I get a finisher T shirt and a medal. When you finish your 140.6 miles, I will send you a Virtual Ironman Finisher T shirt and a Team Orphans medal. Best of all, we will both celebrate, knowing that we helped another child get a forever family.
After you join the team, you need to log your miles each weekend. You have until November 1 at midnight to finish. Some athletes finish an Ironman race in 8 hours. Some athletes take the full 17 hours. It doesn’t matter. The goal is to finish. It’s the same for you! You might finish in August; you might finish on Nov. 1. Persevere! Want to have even more fun? Get your friends to join too. Every weekend, I will be charting our progress across the ocean and featuring 2 or 3 Virtual Ironman members in my Team Orphans blog. So send me a picture and a paragraph about yourself! You’ll get to read about team members of all ages and from all around the country.
Bonus challenge: During the 5 months of exercise, memorize Psalm 146. It tells us about God’s heart for the fatherless and the poor- the very children Team Orphans is helping. You can do it; it’s only 10 verses. For every Ironman, I memorize a chapter of the Bible to recite in my head over and over during the race. It helps me take the focus off myself and put it on God, who makes all of this possible. Will you do the same?
