Baker Publishing Group, with headquarters here in Ada, Michigan, is a four time business sponsor. They sponsored me back before we officially started Team Orphans and I was fundraising on my own. We are so thankful for businesses like Baker who support adoption and orphan care. Thank you, Baker for standing beside Team Orphans year after year.
Sara Harlow, the administrative assistant to the President, is also my best friend and my connection to Baker Publishing. However, I was her first connection to Baker. After we had both recently graduated from college, I told Sara about a job opening at the Baker Book House store. How would I have known that 16 years later, Sara would basically run the company ( my opinion- don’t tell Dwight) and I would direct a charity that needs business sponsors? At that time, Sara was a book lover, but I was definitely not a runner. Sara has now turned me into a book lover, giving me free samples every couple months. However, I have yet to see her run. : )
This year, the Baker company celebrated 75 years in business. With eight divisions of publishing- Baker Books, Revell, Chosen, Bethany House, Baker Academic, Brazos Press, Cambridge Bibles, and God’s Word Translation- the company has an active list of 2,800 titles and an annual output of 270 new works. Baker Book House, the retail arm of the company located on East Paris in Grand Rapids, recently completed a million dollar renovation and store expansion. Book lovers from all over the world come to browse through the beautiful store and look for bargains among the ninety thousand used and bargain books. My favorite area of the new store is the café, complete with coffee, comfy sofas, and delicious cheesecake! And for the college students just down the road at Calvin College, the late night hours of operation are perfect for last minute cram sessions. ( I would have loved this back when I was at Calvin!)
The Baker legacy goes back to 1939 when Herman Baker opened his first bookstore on Wealthy Street in Grand Rapids. By 1949 Baker Book House was one of the largest distributers of religious books in the US and abroad. Now in it’s third generation of leadership, Dwight Baker is the CEO of the company. Baker Publishing is pushing ahead into the future of the book business, converting most of its titles into ebooks right here in the Ada offices. A lot has changed since 1939, but Herman Baker’s quote still lives on, “We love to sell a good book. There is no better business to be in.”
Thank you, Baker Publishing Group, for being a faithful Team Orphans sponsor.
